From June 2018-June 2019, more than 30,000 new citizens became registered voters through the volunteer VDVRs coordinated by the League of Women Voters of Houston.
Registering voters and empowering them with unbiased knowledge matters; our members share a common goal in wanting to increase voter participation in the Houston area. While around 75% of total voting-age citizens in Texas are registered to vote, our state is low in actual voter engagement. The more community members we register, the more opportunities we have to give them the information they need to get to the polls and cast their ballot.
For more information about how to become a VDVR, check out these Frequently Asked Questions.
In order to register voters and submit voter applications, Texas requires that a person be a Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrar (VDVR). For Houston, Harris County regularly offers free one-hour VDVR training.
Harris County is now holding VDVR virtual training sessions on Zoom. To RSVP for one of these sessions, follow these steps:
Go to www.hctax.net
Click on Voter Registration (a drop box will appear)
Click on Volunteer Deputy Voter Register
Scroll to the bottom of the page and find the 2020 Virtual Zoom Training Schedule
Select the training of your choice and click on the RSVP button to fill out the required information
If you are already a registered VDVR, email Voter.firstname.lastname@example.org about wanting to volunteer with the League as a VDVR.
No, while it is preferred that you become a VDVR, LWV-Houston often has volunteer opportunities where that is not required. Email email@example.com and ask to be placed on the mailing list to learn of opportunities.
Not only will you have the opportunity to volunteer at any of our events, but you will also have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and become more actively involved. Additionally, the LWV-Houston is always looking for new opportunities to expand our outreach and we welcome all members’ suggestions.
