Primary Election Runoffs Delayed Until July

Harris County Clerk Offices Remain Closed to the Public, Limited Services Online

(Houston, Texas) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott has postponed the May 26 primary election runoffs until July in response to the coronavirus outbreak (view proclamation here.) The elections are now scheduled for July 14, with early voting taking place July 6-10.

“We will continue to work with the Secretary of State and keep our residents informed about additional updates regarding the runoff elections,” said Harris County Clerk Diane Trautman. “We encourage voters to take advantage of early voting and ballot-by-mail options.”

To be eligible to vote by mail, a voter has to be 65 years or older, have a disability or illness, be out of the county during the election period, or be confined in jail, with no conviction. The last day to apply for a ballot-by-mail is seven days prior to an election. Voters can go to to print out the application or call 713-755-6965 to request one. Harris County Clerk offices remain closed to the public until further notice. Employees will continue serving the public by email and phone, but residents are reminded that they can access most services online. The following are links to available services:

Due to our office being closed to the public, the following services are currently not available at this time.

  • Requesting a marriage license
  • Opening an assumed name (D/B/A)
  • Filing of a home birth record
  • Requesting birth certificate
  • Requesting acknowledgement of paternity
  • Filing power of attorney of a minor
  • Requesting a liquor license

“We will continue to reassess our resources and staffing needs on a weekly basis,” added Trautman. “The health and safety of both the public and our employees is our highest priority.”
