Q. WHO CAN VOTE?

A. You can vote if you
● Are a citizen of the United States
● Are at least 18 years old on the day of the election
● Are a resident of Harris County
● Are registered to vote
● Have not been declared mentally incompetent by a court
● Have not been convicted of a felony, or, if convicted, must have received a certificate of discharge or must have been pardoned

Q. HOW DO I REGISTER TO VOTE?

A. In Harris County, the Voter Registrar is the County Tax Assessor-Collector. You can register in person at
● The Harris Country Voter Registrar’s Office, 1001 Preston Ave., 2nd Floor
● Any of 15 Tax Office substations throughout the County
● Any Texas Dept. of Public Safety where you obtain your driver’s license
● Each Public Library, including any branch or service outlet.
● Voter registration drives where deputized volunteer voter registrars are available
● You can mail in your application. Applications are available at the above sites or online. See Links to Voter Information.
● You receive a Voters Registration Certificate (VCR) within 30 days.

Q. WHERE DO I VOTE?

A. You vote at a designated voting location.
● During the early voting period, you can vote at any of the designated Early Voting Locations, posted online. See Links to Voter Information.
● On Election Day, you must vote in the polling location designated for your precinct of residence. Polling locations for each precinct are listed in the newspaper the day of the election. They are also online See Links to Voter Information.

Q. WHAT DO I TAKE TO THE POLLS?

● Take your Voter Registration Certificate (VCR). This is all that is needed.
● If you do not have your VCR, you can use other identification, such as a Texas Drivers License.
● You can take the LWV HA Voters Guide or other written material into the Voting Booth.
● You are not allowed to display or share any campaign material in the polling place.

Q. WHERE DO I FIND MY PRECINCT NUMBER?

● Your Precinct Number (Pct. No.) shows in the middle of the left side of your Voter Registration Certificate (VCR).
● You can look up your Pct. No. online. See Links to Voter Information.

Q. WHAT DO I DO IF I CHANGE MY ADDRESS AND STILL LIVE IN HARRIS COUNTY?

● Notify the Harris County Voter Registrar of your address change.
● Registration change forms are available from the Harris County Voter Registrar, 1001 Preston, 2nd Floor, 713-368-8683, or online. See Links to Voter Information.
● You can vote in your new precinct 30 days after your notice has been received by the Voter Registrar. You can vote in your previous precinct for one year after you move or until your registration is transferred, whichever comes first.

Q. WHAT DO I DO IF I CHANGE MY ADDRESS AND MOVE TO ANOTHER COUNTY?

● You must re-register in the county of your new residence.
● You may be eligible to vote a limited ballot for 90 days after you move, if your new registration is not yet effective. However, the limited ballot is available only during early voting, not on Election Day.

Q. WHERE DO I VOTE IF I AM A STUDENT WHO IS REGISTERED TO VOTE IN HARRIS COUNTY BUT ATTEND SCHOOL OUTSIDE THE COUNTY?

● You can return home to vote on Election Day or during the early voting period.
● You can vote absentee by using a ballot-by-mail

Q. WHO CAN VOTE BY BALLOT-BY-MAIL AND HOW DO I OBTAIN A BALLOT-BY-MAIL?

● You can submit an application to vote ballot-by-mail
● If you are at least 65,disabled, or confined in jail or
● if absence from the county will prevent you from voting
● You can print an application for a ballot-by-mail online (see Links to Voter Information) or you can request an application by calling 713-755-6405.
