The League of Women Voters
of the Houston Area
records with profound sorrow
the death of
Samuel Keeper
on October 24, 2016

Sam served for more than a decade as LWV-Houston’s Voter Registration Chair. His many effective voter registration campaigns brought tens of thousands of qualified citizens into the electorate and inspired hundreds of volunteers to go out into the field as cheerleaders for democracy. Sam was a civic engagement legend. And he did it all with joy and high spirits and – always – with a twinkle in his eye.

Cele speaks at Inaugural Sam Keeper Award for Excellence in Voter Services. Mary Titus (on camera) and Beni Gutierrez were this year’s award recipients.

“I believe that encouraging the maximum number of citizens to vote should be one of the most important functions of the nation. The League of Women Voters is in the forefront of that effort.”
