Who: The League of Women Voters of the Houston Area, local elected officials and community members; some will be costumed in suffragette-era attire.

What: Houston’s Women’s Equality Day Celebration and fundraiser for voter education resources will feature a movie theater-themed reception, HERstory lesson on the suffrage movement in Houston by Nancy Sims, Senior Vice President of Pierpont Communications, and screening of the 2015 major motion picture, “Suffragette,” starring Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter. Where: Rice Media Center, located on the Rice University Campus at the Corner of University Blvd and Stockton (entrance 8)

Why: August 26, 2016 marks the 96 th anniversary of the ratification of the 19 the Amendment to the United States Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

The League of Women Voters of the Houston Area celebrates this anniversary by putting the PARTY in NONPARTISAN, with a fundraiser to benefit voter education resources, like the “Voters Guide to the Candidates” for the November 2016 election.

Photo Opportunities: Attendees will mix and mingle at a movie theater-themed reception, walk the red carpet and sign the “Equality Wall” with messages about what access to voting means to them. Rice Student volunteers and some attendees will be dressed in Suffragette-inspired fashion.
